plus... i envy anyone who can use oil pastels... Q-Q
--
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?
I never though oil pastels were very difficult at all, in fact, they're really quite easy to use in my opinion-- do you mind my asking what makes them difficult for you? Just in case I can help?

This might be catastrophic.
i'm terrible at coloring, i never know what order to lay my colors down in. with a lot of things, oils especially, i end up with a big, overworked mess. also, i'm a real fan of crisp lines, not exactly what oils are great for.
i've pretty much fallen in love with gouache for the moment, but i am curious, what order do you lay down your colors in? do you go in blocks or color it all in at once? thanks for offering some input

Really, the key is simply to know what you're doing, in terms of color mixing. Oil pastels -even quality ones- get very muddy very quickly, so you've got to lay down the colors properly to begin with, so that once you've done the initial coloring, you've just got to do fine-tuning. If helps, test out your pallet in colored pencils in the margins to make sure it works before you do the real thing.
